Last night someone named Susan showed up and said something nice about my books. I said, aw thanks, it's lovely to hear good things because, see, it can be tough on the ego being a writer.

I asked her if she was trying to be a writer, and she said yes, and I think I even gave her a couple of tips or something equally mortifying along the lines of "don't give up, it can be hard to get published!" I can't recall what, exactly, because those chats go fast.

Turns out it was Susan Meier. Yeah, she's a writer: she's published 28 books.
Oh. Ah.

Beth is excused tonight because she has put in her time. She can do something more fun tonight, perhaps drink something with six ingredients and a frothy top.

    Oh dear about the nice authorly advice, lol. But you know, advice is always welcome!!
    LOL!
    I was once sitting next to someone at a luncheon. I asked him what he did - and he replied he was a drummer.
    I wished him luck, adding that being a musician was very hard, and I hoped he'd find a group and be successful. I have a cousin who is a musician, so I gave him some advice.
    He sort of coughed into his napkin and asked me if, by any chance, I knew of a group called 'Police'. Turns out it was Stuart Copeland.

A two star Amazon review on His American Detective: "Bodice ripper about gay men by a woman." and I'm longing to comment "don't you mean a waistcoat ripper?" God, no. Stop me. The reviews rarely rattle me any longer -- except when I spot a truth in a bad one. When that happens, I actually lose sleep. This means I still care about writing.  Speaking of reviewers and writers: A couple of days ago, a writer said she was tired of getting white ladies writing reviews of her books. She had an excellent point in the long run: her stories are meant for a particular audience and she wants them to resonate with those people and get more reviews from them.  But that first line was just....horribly obnoxious. I say this from my POV of course. Not a white lady who writes reviews -- but as a review grubber.   Anyone who disses any reader (especially ones that give honest reviews) deserves to be cast into the pit of being ignored.

I can't stay away from the subject of Sarah Palin. I've been looking at the trashiest stories, too. Nothing to do with her stands on important issues (or if Alaska's proximity to Russia means she's got experience with foreign issues). Some of my conclusions from the wading into useless dreck: She's far better looking than she was when she did sportscasting. Say what you like about her, I think she's pretty. She's probably got the sort of charisma that gives me the willies. A lot of people who are considered inspiring make me want to escape their presence. A form of jealousy? A sense of inferiority? Maybe. Anyway, from the reports I've read, she's supposed to be the sort of person who makes you feel as if she's listening to you and cares about your opinion. She's got a room-filling presence.
