The older I get, the less often I look in the mirror, and the more often I shrink away from cameras. Just now I was trying to get a picture of the dogs and hit a button that flipped the view around. From cute little pup to--bam--doughy-faced, double chinned me. The loathing I felt when I saw that image took me by surprise. I've clearly done a good job hiding from myself because that sight really was a shock. God, she's hideous . I looked at myself and saw all the fat blobby ladies I felt scorn for through all those early, more attractive years of my life. God. I'm not talking about a mild hmm that feature can change or maybe less of a chin . It was the entire thing, details and big picture, that I loathed. It was rather amazing how much I disliked that image. This isn't going to work , I thought. I can't walk around feeling that much disdain for me. Anyone else, sure--as in, someone else can feel that way about me. Or I can feel that way about someone else...

People who want Victorian-set historicals without titled types

Image
Listen. I got what you want. Seriously, if this is what people want to read, I should be a freaking best-selling author.** Most of my books are set in the 1880s -- I've done a lot of research about that era and feel comfortable there. “a fine eye for detail, Rothwell recreates the era beautifully.” -- RT Bookclub These links are all to Amazon.  Here's my list: Somebody Wonderful --1880s hero=NYC cop/ heroine=wealthy but not a lady-like person (she's based on Pauline from Perils of Pauline) Somebody to Love --heroine=mixed-race chef/ hero=brother of SW heroine. Granted the guy is wealthy, but he doesn't have a title. Okay? Good. Someone To Cherish --hero=NYC cop/heroine=impoverished innocent Powder of Sin --hero=a detective/ heroine=okay she's a wealthy heiress, daughter of nobility. But she's half American and she lives in NYC. The Mad Baron --Does a baron have to count? He's hardly a duke or earl. She's a shop-girl and he's an addict. ...

No Greeting Card Abilities here, baby

I'm working on a blurb sheet for a Samhain book coming out in October and boy, do I suck at blurb sheets. Quick, fun, tagline about a title? Nope, can't manage that. How about a longer blurb to capture a reader? Ummmm. Well see, remember the mariel boat lift ? yeah, I only sort of do. But they were shoved out of their homes and prisons and. . .. How about if they're only half-people, but wait, they're of course the same species...Hey, why're you walking away? I think the hardest question, the one that I'm currently avoiding (by messing around here): List some titles that are similar in nature to this book. . . . . Not exactly the same, but lets the bookseller recommend this book to a reader who likes the type. I bet I'm not the only writer who goes slack-jawed whuh duh? on this one. I don't want to imitate other people so if I do, it's an accident. I'd be the last to see the resemblance. Actually, it's not just a matter of being too clos...

SBD--tipping the scales back

I finished my 8 RITA books at long last. All 8 were put out by big name publishers. I'm not going to talk about the books because that wouldn't be kosher. But let me just say that to rinse out the flavor between some of those stale, predictable stories and their stale, flat characters, I picked up my computer to read me some Carrie Lofty, Sam Winston, Bonnie Dee and Bettie Sharpe. If I had more print books to go through, I'd probably line up AM Riley, Shiloh Walker....just in case. Okay maybe I should actually draw up a list of my faves some day but that's not the point. Back on track: Get it yet? To make myself read what promised to be a bland print book, I'd promise myself an ebook at the other side. The point at last: I am turning into an ebook snob. Never mind the fact that only a few of those print books were dreary and the others were just fine. The truth is only one was great as the ebooks I read over the same period and none took risks or stuck in my brain...

Thursday Thirteen scolding nagging whining questions

1. What is it with you authors? I give you a perfectly easy way to publicize your books and you don't send me your lists. Who's organizing your lives? Hire a publicist! And if she's any good, send me her address. 2. Who's idea was it to have ice fall out of the sky? it makes no sense, people. Rain, sure. Snow if you must. But what's with the tippity tappity of ice? Unnatural. 3. Why is it as soon as I decide I have a great system in place (one hour of writing, ten minutes activity) I undermine my system and blog hop? 4. Hey, kid, how many times do you have to play Hier Kommt Alex ? Don't you think that's enough? And what kind of name is Die Toten Hosen (the Dead Trousers)? 5. Who left the chocolate cake where I could find it? 6. Who left the remote on the couch so that when the kid sat on it, the batteries ran down? 7. Even with "Heir Kommt Alex" blaring on Guitar Hero 3, why do I have a Christmas carol blaring in my head. Granted at least it...

Faith. Got it?

It's God theme day! We were talking about the personal God thing once again, a boy and I. He believes, and I said G ood! That can help you and be a true form of strength . . . or so I hear. . . and then later on some random thing by Corn Dog reminded me of the subject again vizzz The idea of of A God Who Knows We, Each of Us, Exist (and actually cares). Nope, I can't get there. If there is such a set up, it'd probably be too Terry Pratchett in my mind. My practically best friend in the world believes that God is watching and that there are angels. She doesn't seem particularly Hallmark Channel about it, and it's based on a thoughtful lifetime raised in religion by a pastor dad. She has said that she can't imagine living without faith, that if that corner of her were ripped out, she'd suffer. Maybe that combo of fear and comfort is enough to keep belief alive--because it feels right, it slips into place that would be howlingly empty other wise. That's...
