But first: Did you notice that if you raise a lot of money for CFF you can maybe win a crit from LEAH HULTENSCHMIDT from Dorchester? Did you see that? Or a boat-load of donations will get you an 80 gig Ipod? Meme time. Rules: 1) Link to the person that tagged you. 2) Post the rules on your blog. 3) List six unspectacular quirks you have. 4) Tag six bloggers by linking them. 5) Leave a comment on each person's blog to let them know they've been tagged. Lyn "PITA too" Cash tagged me. Rules are posted above. I liked Lyn's, especially details of how she broke the toe. Just enough to make it intriguing not enough to explain squat. I'm skipping steps 4 and 5. * * * I go for lots of sneezes, not just one or two. Drives Mike crazy and he always ends up yelling "enough already." After a gazillion years, you'd think he'd be used to it by now. But that's his quirk, not mine. * * * One summer when I was a teenager, I gave tours in DC, I lied like ...

This is one of the best: A never-live horse is beaten dead at a political site. Within hours of posting, it's new and mentioned in about 17 blogs. And by the time you read this, it's old. I love it. (Should be passe by tomorrow.) broken bread photo from juniperimages.com and they can tell me to dump it any time.

Oh, and Laurie loves books

Laurie tagged me and other people have, too, but she's the latest. That six meme thing. Six Unimportant Facts About Me The rules are: 1. Link back to the person who tagged you. 2. Post the rules on your blog. 3. Share six unimportant things about yourself. 4. Tag six random people at the end of your blog entry. 5. Let the tagged people know by leaving a comment on their blogs. six boring things about me: 1. My house smells bad. Granted, with three teen /pre-teen boys on board, the place never smells like a sweet meadow. Today is particularly gruesome. 2. My dog sneezes and scratches all the time. She's probably in need of exercise. 3. I finished another book the other day (writing it, I mean) and did nothing to celebrate except check my email. I no longer mark milestones--I think it's some sort of superstition. I don't even stop to eat chocolate. 4. Sometimes I can't read new books and just reread the ones on my keeper shelf. I'm going through one of those ph...

the seven things meme

Bettie Sharpe (who will be famous any minute) gave this one to me. 1. I worry about yelling at my kids because I grew up with a shouter parent. So every time I start, I turn it into a humorous event--I go over the top, so all involved end up laughing. ha. ha. Discipline around here sucks. The "wait until your father gets home" thing I swore would never happen, happens. He doesn't shout. He just looks at the kids with thin lips and they crumple. If necessary he speaks to them in a low, tense voice. (and sometimes I wonder if maybe shouting isn't better.) 2. I miss the denim/corduroy jacket I lost eight years ago--actually I'm pretty certain it was stolen. Every time I go into a store, I look for a version of it. I don't think I'd buy one, but I still look. Also I look for the cutest pair of baby shoes and I most definitely won't be buying them. 3. When I was 14, I went to Denmark with one of those exchange programs (The Experiment, it was called. Heh....

since it's easy

This is from Doug and doesn't require much, so fine I'll do it. SOON VERY VERY SOON. I will 1. Steal Bam's contest away 2. Feature Shirley Jump at last. A week ago I was not around at least not so's you'd notice. So to the meme: The basic facts: Who is your significant other? Michael How long have you been together? Since 8/82 A longass time Dating/Engaged/Married? very married. How old is your S.O.? 52 and he's older by four years. Okay? Get it? We're old. OLD. What’s his/her middle name? I bet he'd hate it if I said. Archer. Which one? Who eats more? Nowadays he does, usually, except if chocolate's involved. At the moment we're both outclassed by all three boys who can do amazing things especially to ice cream and cereal. Who says "I love you" first? Both? Maybe? Why the hell don't I know the answers to these questions? It seems pretty damn basic, doesn't it? Maybe I'm sleeping through my marriage. Shit. Who weighs ...

screen shots! Not so hard after all

Yes, I still can't hear and my ears hurt. BUT I have memes . What is this meme? It's such an old word on the interwebs no one asks any more and so I don't get to read someone else asking the dumb "huh" question and pretend I knew it the whole time. I don't know what it means. I know what it is. Anyway I have two of them and here's one now! It's from Lovelysalome/Carrie OOooo it's more like a chain letter without the riches or recipes or curses. Here's the desktop. It has my dog. Hi Sooz! Lots of stuff on there because my kids and I both use this damn computer. But I did go through lately and dump all the documents on the screen except one. The one is the grocery list. Alphabetized, divided into sections of the store, devised by my compulsive husband (he's the one who's kept gas books for every car he's ever owned. As in every time he or I buy gas, we write down mileage and gallons. He also enters the data onto the computer and .....

short and easy and here we go

161 & 5 Book Meme from Darla Rules: 1. Grab the book closest to you 2. Open it to page 161 3. Find the fifth full sentence 4. Post the text of the sentence to your blog 5. Don't search around for the coolest book you have, use the one that is really next to you 6. Tag five people to do this meme. Oh jeeeeeesus. The book closest to me at the moment is the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. No, no, a thousand times, no. Okay how about this one, wedged in next to the OED's box: Zugibe is not on a mission to prove the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin--as, I suspect, Barbet was. I'll post the title later. And I won't tag anyone because then I'll feel guilty, even though this is a fun one.

answering the meme

First, a word from our sponsor: ENTER THE FLIPPING CONTESTS. A lot of my 8 things are about other people because I'm dull, but here you go. 1. My grandfather invented the x-acto knife. Sundel invented the damn thing and I think it even says so at the official website. Sunny (and I hear he was something of a mournful grouch) was an inventor all his life. So there, Louise. 2. Louise, my cousin (actually my mother's cousin) was US poet laureate** and in interviews has said her father did .. . The story I've heard is that my grandfather invented it to be a surgical tool. It didn't work well for that because it was impossible to clean well and Uncle Danny was probably the one to suggest marketing it as a hobby tool. 3. but I don't really know the exact details because I can't recall any conversations with my grandfather who was senile by the time I noticed him. I do recall conversations with Uncle Danny--Louise's father, who was much younger than Sunny. Danny...
