today I blogged at Romance Unleashed

I've been reading a bunch (well, four) of non-romance non-fantasy non-mass-market-land books lately.

After a few years of a full diet of mass-market, I can no longer evaluate books that are not romance or mystery or have the clear plot pattern of, say, a fantasy. If something in the plot or characters seems off I think well, maybe the author meant us to think it's off--I don't automatically think this writer is an unclear doofus. I look for messages and symbolism just because I figure it has to be there. I think I'm going to go back to Mass-market-land soon. I'm tired of being overawed. Actually I want to read Doug's book, if I can find it on my computer.

What I do like? Reading the Amazon reviews of one of those books wherein I discover everyone else knows the truth:
What a pretentious dolt.
I loved this book--it changed my life forever.
It's a load of garbage.
Best book of the decade. READ it NOW.
Don't waste your money on this immature batch of scribbles

    Incidentally -- check out the Lara Logan video at Crooks and Liars. My new hero. And beautiful, too, but she'd be my new hero even if she looked like Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dangerously. Wow. That woman makes me want to start all over again and, next time around, go into journalism.

A two star Amazon review on His American Detective: "Bodice ripper about gay men by a woman." and I'm longing to comment "don't you mean a waistcoat ripper?" God, no. Stop me. This means I still care about writing.  Speaking of reviewers and writers: A couple of days ago, a writer said she was tired of getting white ladies writing reviews of her books. She had an excellent point in the long run: her stories are meant for a particular audience and she wants them to resonate with those people and get more reviews from them.  But that first line was just....horribly obnoxious. I say this from my POV of course. Not a white lady who writes reviews -- but as a review grubber.   Anyone who disses any reader (especially ones that give honest reviews) deserves to be cast into the pit of being ignored.

I can't stay away from the subject of Sarah Palin. I've been looking at the trashiest stories, too. Nothing to do with her stands on important issues (or if Alaska's proximity to Russia means she's got experience with foreign issues). Some of my conclusions from the wading into useless dreck: She's far better looking than she was when she did sportscasting. Say what you like about her, I think she's pretty. She's probably got the sort of charisma that gives me the willies. A lot of people who are considered inspiring make me want to escape their presence. A form of jealousy? A sense of inferiority? Maybe. Anyway, from the reports I've read, she's supposed to be the sort of person who makes you feel as if she's listening to you and cares about your opinion. She's got a room-filling presence. Eeearrrgh. All of that sounds just like what they said about Bill Clinton. I never particularly paid attention to the fact that Hillary is female--sure
