bye-bye hard drive

bye-bye several hundred pages of stories, a couple hundred email addresses, photos of my family, every single work in progress I have.

I'm now going to take the hard drive out and put it in the freezer. My husband says that sometimes works. Wotthehell.

sob.

In the meantime, the boys will let me share this computer. They're scared of me just now so that should work out well.

Whoa! Wait! Before dousing yourself with gasoline, try an emergency startup disk. If it's the operating system and not the drive, all of your stuff is still there.

  2. I'm dousing mr. dell or mr. gates with gasoline, not me.

A dour Bulgarian in Canada and I worked on this problem for hours (the whole time we were on the phone he really needed a smoke and I really needed a cup of coffee and my laptop to work) --we attempted parallel installation of XP with no luck. Right now the chkdsk feature is rolling, rolling, rolling and has been for three hours. Not a good sign for the hard drive.

I'm not yanking anything out until I hear from The Dour One again. I'm paying him the big bucks, after all. ($100 for a software save at Dell.)

But he -- and the other four technicians I talked to until I got to him -- muttered "not good, not good" often enough for me to lose all hope.

  3. I feel your pain. I had a computer crash in January and lost baby pictures and files. Luckily, I had backed up most of the pictures and my ebooks, so I only lost a month of those, but even a small loss is devestating so I imagine you ARE ready to douse something with gasoline!

I'm still holding out hope. Good luck!

  5. Oh no, Kate! I’m so sorry to hear that.

My hard drive crashed about 3 years ago and I lost so much it still makes me teary-eyed to think of it. All of my WIPs and story ideas, etc. I had backed everything up onto CDs just a few days before that and thought I was safe. Turns out the CD was corrupted and all was lost except for a few things. Needless to say, I always check those CDs after I burn them now.

I hope Jason’s right and that you’ll be able to recover everything.

  6. Oh, Kate, how awful.

I had a similar thing happen, but was able to save my WIP. So my pain is nothing compared to yours. Good luck.

    Gaaaaaah.

Man, I wish I and the Very Tall Husband lived closer to you, because the two of us? Have killed and ressurected a whole buncha computers, and we might've been able to help you out.

Does your laptop allow dual hard disks? (Actualy, I have no idea if ANY laptop can be configured to accept dual hard drives, actually, because I've only owned [and broken] desktops.) Because if you can, then an option would be to buy a brand-new disk, install the operating system on that, boot up from THAT hard drive and then attempt to access the other hard drive after booting up.

Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear about this, Kate.

  8. What Candy says worked for me when I had hard drive corruption. DH just ran something in Windows and it found the stuff when other programs couldn't read anything.

  9. Nothing worked for me when a virus ate everything on my computer about a year ago - but then I didn't work hard to save it, because I've always backed up to web-based mail. Thank god for Gmail. I got very lucky. And I hope this incident serves to remind everyone reading it to back up their files, because we do tend to get very complacent and it's just panic-inducing when things crash.

But andyway, I'm so sorry this has happened, Kate. Please eat vast amounts of chocolate. And wine wouldn't hurt either.
