recognize this one?

This whole Everyone Must Be Eighteen before doing the sexxx or marriage, which is all the rage.... is not true in the historical I'm reading. It includes:
1. a pregnant unmarried 15-year-old (bad girl, not a main character, but the object of pity).
2. a 35 year old and 25 yr old vying for a 16-year-old, one of the main characters . The older guy is the good guy and he wins.

So? Know it? No, it's not Beatrice Small. Go on, guess.

  1. I know I know this, but I can't find it in my brain so apparently I don't know.

Please tell before my head explodes?

  2. My guess is it's vintage. I'd prolly guess Barbara Cartland on the 16year old heroine with much older beaux thing - but the pregnant 15 year old object of pity doesn't sound like her. No idea.

  3. I'll say it's vintage. It's Sense and Sensibility.

Marianne is 16 when the novel starts. Col Brandon is 35, Willoughby is 25. Col Brandon's ward, Eliza Williams, (whom everyone assumes is his "natural daughter") is I think 14? 15? and ends up pregnant after running away with ...someone.

At least Eleanor is legal. She's 18 or 19 when the novel starts.

  4. It could be argued that because it was WRITTEN during the Regency era, it's not really a historical. But it sure reads like one. It even has a few things I'm sure the Historical Police might jump on. ("no one would speak of such a subject to polite young ladies!" or maybe "Two hundred pounds a year? Impossible to live on that.")

  5. Ooooooh! I almost guessed S&S but I'd forgotten about the ward thing (still can't remember it actually - it's been a while....)

OMG! My password sounds like the textword for a historical romance! It's "bdsripr"
